James Bowens
Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor
Richland County Recreation Commission
Columbia
Age 35
I am an assistant recreation center supervisor and Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) with Richland County Parks and Recreation. Every day, I have the opportunity to create programs and events that bring people together, encourage healthy lifestyles, and make recreation accessible for individuals of all ages and abilities. I believe God has blessed me with the ability to serve others through my work, and I strive to lead with compassion, integrity, and a positive attitude in everything I do. My long-term goal is to continue growing as a leader while expanding opportunities that positively impact the lives of those in my community. Giving back means using my gifts to encourage others, build meaningful relationships, and create spaces where everyone feels welcomed, valued, and included. I am grateful for every opportunity to make a difference, no matter how big or small, and I hope my work continues to inspire others to serve with purpose, faith, and a heart for their community.
Favorite Quote and Why: Philippians 4:19 (KJV): "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." This verse reminds me that no matter what challenges I face, God is always faithful to provide what I need. It encourages me to trust him completely, stay focused on my purpose, and remember that with Christ, what seems impossible can become possible. My faith gives me strength, direction, and confidence in both my personal life and my career.
Definition of a Successful Leader: To me, a successful leader is someone who puts God first, leads with integrity, and genuinely cares about the well-being of others. A great leader is kind, compassionate, and willing to serve, while also having the wisdom and confidence to make difficult decisions when necessary. Leadership is about setting a positive example, encouraging others to reach their full potential, and making a lasting difference through selfless service.
Advice to 18-Year-Old Self: I would tell my 18-year-old self to keep praying, stay focused on your goals, and never give up. Trust God's timing, even when the journey doesn't go as planned. It's OK to have a backup plan because life happens, but don't let setbacks discourage you. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and the hard times are often tests that prepare you for something greater. Stay faithful, keep moving forward, and remember that difficult seasons don't last forever.
