Chester County Resident and Retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant Selected as Newest South Carolina Veteran of the Year

(Image Courtesy of the SCDVA)The South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) has announced Retired Army Master Sergeant Major, Alfonso J. Boyd as the newest South Carolina Veteran of the Year. The Veteran of the Year award serves as recognition to honor the remarkable contributions of Veterans in our community.

MSG RET Alfonso J. Boyd (US Army) served with distinction in the United States Army for approximately 22 years. He returned to his hometown and established a JROTC program for Great Falls and Lewisville High Schools. He later moved to expand the JROTC program at Chester High School. He served Chester County for at least 12 years in that capacity, helping to expand the minds and experiences of his students. Since then, he has aided Chester County Veterans in receiving over a million dollars in benefits which helps the local economy.

Boyd leads a team of Disabled American Veterans in an effort to seek and uplift other Veterans. He leads the way in comradery by joining and encouraging others to become members of multiple Veterans’ organizations to strengthen and preserve the attitude of a grateful nation. He is actively involved in and supports the county's voting registration efforts. He partners with and supports local businesses to become involved in assisting Veterans and citizens who are in need. He established and continues to sponsor the local "Ride For Jesus" Motorcycle Sunday held yearly in Chester County. He works actively in the church to motivate and guide youth to pursue careers and become productive citizens of the county and society. Lastly, Boyd maintains a stable home environment for family while celebrating the accomplishment of his favorite people, his grandchildren.

Alfonso Boyd has been the Commander of Disabled American Veterans, James D. Wessinger Chapter 19 for 10 years. He has led the chapter through difficult times including the loss of a past Commander by suicide during the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, Boyd has raised the bar for his chapter and county by planning and executing Veterans programs such as 2017 Wounded Warrior Amputee Softball Tournament and Banquet, Quilt of Valor ceremonies, three "Dinner with a General" ceremonies celebrating the three native Chester County Generals, the first ever “Vietnam Veteran Widow” recognition ceremony, Veterans Day Parade, formed uniform Honor Guard, etc. He has hosted seven years of Memorial and Veterans Day events.

Commander Boyd has combined the focus of all Chester County Veterans organizations. He coordinates Veteran care utilizing county wide organizations and sources. He exercises buddy care and spends countless hours telephoning members and visiting the sick. Commander Boyd also serves as the Committeemen to District 5 where he distributed food bags to all Chapters, scheduled Military Appreciation Night at Golden Corral for both Chapters along with fundraising activity and educating public about DAV programs. He has attended all DECs. This year he serves as Department Sgt at Arms and Officer of the Day.

Under his leadership Chapter 19 has strengthened its financial position and comradery all the while observing Chapter, Department, and National Constitution By Laws. He continues to be a top membership recruiter. He is a 20-year member who goes above and beyond to ensure the success of the Chapter and its goals. In July 2024 he was honored with the WCNC Hyundai Hometown Hero Award for the Charlotte television market.
