John Humphries, who served as general manager at WYFF 4 from 2016 until his retirement in 2024, will be inducted into the South Carolina Broadcasters Association (SCBA) Hall of Fame at the Awards of Distinction dinner on Friday, January 30, in Columbia.

“For as long as I’ve known and worked with John, he has been a champion of local broadcasting,” said Blake Bridges, president and general manager of WYFF 4. “He dedicated most of his career to being a broadcaster right here in the Carolinas, leading with integrity, compassion and character. He is truly deserving of this prestigious award, and we look forward to honoring him.”

The SCBA’s most prestigious award was created to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the growth and development of the broadcast industry in South Carolina. Recipients also have reached the highest levels of achievement and success in broadcasting on a local or national level. Humphries joins a distinguished group of WYFF 4/WFBC-TV employees to receive this honor. Wilson C. Wearn (1977), Beverly Whitmire (1985), and Robert A. Jolley (1985) were all instrumental in the early days of radio and television in Greenville. Dave McAtee (2005) and Doug Smith (2008) also represent WYFF 4 in the Hall of Fame. Both men held the title of president and general manager at the station before their retirements. Michael J. Hayes (2022) is the most recent Hall of Fame recipient. Hayes served as president and general manager at WYFF 4 and now is president of Hearst Television.

Humphries spent 19 years with Hearst Television and more than four decades in broadcast TV. Broadcasting & Cable named him ‘General Manager of the Year’ for mid-size television markets in 2018. Prior to his time at WYFF 4, he served as president and general manager from 2012 to 2016 at Hearst Television sister station, WGAL-TV, the NBC affiliate serving the Lancaster-Harrisburg-Lebanon-York, Pennsylvania, television market. Prior to WGAL, he served for six years as general sales manager at WYFF 4. Before joining Hearst Television, Humphries was general sales manager for WBTV in Charlotte, NC and held the same position at WSPA-TV/WASV-TV in the Greenville-Spartanburg market. He began his career at Charlotte’s WSOC-TV, initially as a production specialist and later as a sports reporter and anchor, before making the jump to sales at WSOC as an account executive and, subsequently, local sales manager. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Speech from Appalachian State University, in Boone, NC, for which he has served on the Alumni Council.
