The City of Orangeburg Department of Public Utilities said it will receive a grant for grid improvements from Santee Cooper through the GRID Resilience Grant Program.

Officials said the funding will be used to support critical infrastructure projects designed to strengthen the city’s energy systems and improve overall resilience against power disruptions.

Approximately $689,721 was received to:

* Implement remote sensing solutions for vegetation.

* Replace transmission conductors and poles, insulators, static lines and other ancillary material.

* Replace older electrochemical recloser with a new electronic device.

Officials said the grid improvement projects will reduce the number of outages and improve restoration times during extreme weather events.

Santee Cooper is South Carolina’s largest power provider and the ultimate source of electricity for 2 million people across the state.

“We are thrilled to receive this funding from Santee Cooper to enhance the quality of life for Orangeburg’s residents,” said Warren Harley, manager, department of public utilities. “Strengthening our energy infrastructure is vital to ensuring that our residents, businesses, and critical services have reliable and resilient power."

Harley added, "This grant will help us continue to modernize and protect Orangeburg’s energy systems for years to come.”

The city of Orangeburg was one of 14 awarded projects across the state.
