A data center supplier has begun operations in rural Orangeburg County with a new, $7.4 million factory.
Dallas-headquartered Mission Critical Interior Solutions Inc. makes raised flooring used to help keep computer equipment cool, security cages and cabinets needed to hold the vast number of servers housed in the high-tech centers that are popping up across the state and nation.
MCIS has pledged to hire 49 workers for its facility near the small town of Springfield — population 450 — located about 40 miles south of Columbia.
Orangeburg County posted the state’s fourth-highest unemployment rate, at 6.6%, in September, the latest month available due to the federal government shutdown.
The factory will make specialized containers for the cables and wires that run overhead in the centers, according to an announcement by the state Department of Commerce.
Operations have already begun, according to the Commerce Department.
To bring MCIS to South Carolina, the state approved it for corporate income tax breaks worth $25,000 for each job created.
Those new jobs were not immediately listed on the company’s career page. Nor did the company give the average wage for any open positions.
Orangeburg County Council also approved the operation for a reduced property tax rate. The county did not provide any details publicly about the incentives it offered.
